Sleep apnea is a common disorder characterized by shallow breathing during sleep and low levels of blood oxygen. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of this disorder and occurs when the airway is narrow or blocked, causing a pause in breathing during sleep. Medical professionals such as Domenick Coletti, DDS treat OSA depending on the severity of the disorder. The following are some options in treating OSA:
• Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) - This option involves the patient wearing a device while sleeping, providing pressurized air that reduces airway obstruction. Though effective, it is not a cure because it only works when the patient is wearing the mask. Without it, symptoms of OSA are likely to return.
• Surgery - Surgery is done only when the disorder is severe. There are several types of surgery that can be performed, but otolaryngologists and sleep specialists must be involved in deciding on the right procedure.
• Lifestyle change - A much simpler way to relieve the symptoms of OSA is by changing one’s lifestyle. Avoiding alcohol and sedatives, losing weight, and not sleeping on the back may decrease apnea spells.
